Ontario Online Gaming

In August 2010, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced it was moving into the online gaming business. The provincial government directed OLG to set up an online gambling site that included poker, lottery ticket sales and interactive casino-style games.

The intention was to launch a real-money gaming site, PlayOLG, in 2012. But the process took longer than anticipated, and OLG didn't select a gaming provider until April 2013.

In a statement announcing the deal, OLG said it selected Spielo G2 in a "competitive procurement process" to supply "interactive casino-style games for online play including slots, video poker games, and table games." Lottery tickets would also be for sale on PlayOLG.

Spielo G2 would also handle player account management and age verification and would be responsible for following responsible playing guidelines.

PlayOLG was expected to launch in phases. Rollout of online lottery ticket sales and online casino games was slated for fall 2013. Online bingo and poker would launch during later phases, along with limited sports betting (single-game wagering in Canada is illegal, though a bill that would legalize single-game wagering passed through the House of Commons in 2012 and gained traction in the Senate in early 2015). PlayOLG finally launched in January 2015.
