An estimated 50,000 gamblers and curiosity seekers Monday helped Sheldon Adelson open Macau to "an exciting new era" for U.S. investments in China's multibillion-dollar gaming market.

International News Brief: Hours before the gleaming $240 million Sands Macao was opened to gamblers, thousands of people had already lined up outside the building covered with gold-coloured glass.

Barring any unexpected setbacks or changes, a new international gaming era is set to debut late this evening when officials from Las Vegas Sands Inc. will open the U.S. company's first casino venture in the seaside Chinese enclave of Macau.

Gaming magnate Sheldon Adelson's 1-million-square-foot Sands Macau casino and entertainment complex, which is leading a wave of new casino developments off the coast of China, is expected to open May 18.

Alliance Gaming’s Bally Gaming and Systems business unit has signed a contract with Las Vegas Sands, Inc. to provide an integrated marketing and casino management system and nearly 34 percent of the slot floor for the new Las Vegas Sands resort scheduled to open in Macau this spring.
