The Venetian had been trying to prevent union activists from protesting there. Unlike most Strip resorts, the Venetian has not agreed to a card-counting process that makes it easier for unions to organize. The Venetian promises to appeal, and the Culinary Union promises more demonstrations.

Venetian to Help Protect Waterways in Venice

The Venetian hotel-casino said it has developed an "alliance" with a Venice group formed to protect and redevelop the waterways surrounding the historic Italian city. The Las Vegas resort has joined forces with "The Forum for the Venice Lagoon," which was formed in 1991 to preserve the waterways in the Italian City.

The French perfume retailer entered the U.S. market last year. With its first Las Vegas site having just opened at the Venetian, the company has announced that it will add two more stores on the Strip. The Showcase mall will have a Sephora, and so will the Aladdin.

Strip Has First Black Restaurant Owner

Robert L. Johnson, founder of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) cable company, became the first African-American to own a restaurant in a major Strip hotel-casino. Clark County officials approved his Tres Jazz for opening next month in the Paris hotel-casino. They also approved actor Robert De Niro's restaurant planned for the Hard Rock Hotel.

Monopoly Table Game to be Developed

Mikohn Gaming Corp. said it's been licensed by Hasbro Inc. for development of a new casino table game based on Monopoly, the world's most popular board game. The Monopoly Poker casino game is expected to debut in casinos later this year.

Bankruptcy Likely for Las Vegas Casino Company

Fitzgeralds Gaming Corp. has defaulted on $205 million in bonds, and now says it is likely to seek relief in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company has casinos in downtown Las Vegas and in Tunica, Miss., and Black Hawk, Colo. It still hopes to expand the Tunica and Black Hawk facilities.

Madame Tussaud's Opens First U.S. Location, in Las Vegas

The famed wax museum opens at the Venetian, on the Strip. It will have a decidedly Las Vegas flavor here, featuring gaming legend Bugsy Siegel, Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and music stars Wayne Newton, Tom Jones and Liberace. There's Elvis too, of course

Harrah's Sells Las Vegas Showboat Hotel-Casino to Local Group

Harrah's Entertainment said it will sell the Las Vegas Showboat, an off-Strip property, for an undisclosed price. The company bought Showboat Inc. in June 1998. Harrah's put its name on the Showboat in East Chicago, Ind., and kept the Showboat in Atlantic City.
