Sinatra Estate Sues Desert Inn

Sheffield Enterprises Inc. sued the Desert Inn hotel-casino, alleging it infringed Sheffield's rights on the late Frank Sinatra's name, identity and persona by using Sheffield's trademarks in its advertising and sales of goods and services. The Desert Inn hosts the "Rat Pack is Back," a David Cassidy tribute performance.

The $800 million resort is adjacent to Bally's, across from Bellagio.

A federal judge rules that the sidewalks in front of the Venetian hotel-casino are public forums.and activities there are protected by the First Amendment. The Venetian had been trying to prevent union activists from protesting there. Unlike most Strip resorts, the Venetian has not agreed to a card-counting process that makes it easier for unions to organize. The Venetian promises to appeal, and the Culinary Union promises more demonstrations.

The Venetian hotel-casino said it has developed an "alliance" with a Venice group formed to protect and redevelop the waterways surrounding the historic Italian city. Nevada officials will investigate the problem of subcontractors not getting paid for their work on the Venetian hotel-casino, which has been slowly opening since May. Separately, Moody's said it's reviewing its ratings on $712.5 million of the Venetian's debt. In part because of liens filed by the subs and the delayed opening, Moody's said, it may downgrade the bonds.

Sephora Will Be First Tenant in Expansion of Showcase Mall6 August 1999
The French perfume retailer entered the U.S. market last year. With its first Las Vegas site having just opened at the Venetian, the company has announced that it will add two more stores on the Strip. The Showcase mall will have a Sephora, and so will the Aladdin.
