Puerto Rican Lotteries

Puerto Rico has two lotteries: the Lotería Tradicional and the Lotería Electrónica. The traditional lottery was established by Spanish settlers in 1813, and its modern counterpart sells tickets via retailers throughout the country and holds weekly drawings to be split by winners.

The electronic lottery was established in May 1989 to generate additional revenue for developmental projects within Puerto Rico. The electronic lottery is conducted over a network of linked lottery machines in retail locations and is controlled by the Departamento de Hacienda.
