Louisiana Sports Betting
In March 2018, a House bill was introduced to authorize sports betting at the small number of land-based racinos already operating in the state. The bill did not move forward during the state's legislative session.
In April 2019, Senate Bill 153, introduced by Sen. Danny Martiny (R – Metairie), was approved by a Senate panel. The bill would legalize betting on college and professional sports at Louisiana's 15 riverboat casinos, the land-based casino in New Orleans and four racetracks. It would also allow for on-property mobile sports wagering. Lawmakers did not pass the bill before the deadline.
In November 2020, voters in 55 parishes supported authorizing sports betting, but the state legislature still needed to enact the legislation to determine where it can be offered. In April 2021, the House Ways and Means Committee advanced the bill.
In June 2020, the governor signed a bill to legalize online fantasy sports contests in the state.
Retail sports betting launched in October 2021. Online sports betting was officially introduced in January 2022, just in time for the Super Bowl, with six operators going live.
