The state of Mississippi signed a compact with the Choctaw Indians of Mississippi in 1992. In 1994, the tribe opened its first Class III facility, the Silver Star Hotel and Casino. Despite significant local and legislative opposition, the tribe continued to expand its portfolio in 2002 and developed the Pear River Resort, which included the Golden Moon Hotel & Casino. In 2011, the tribe also opened the Bok Homa Casino about 100 miles north of their first two casinos.

In September 2017, the Choctaw tribe collected a sufficient number of petitions to hold a referendum to build an additional casino in the Red Water community near Carthage. The measure failed the full vote in November of the same year.
