Myanmar, like Cambodia, has taken advantage of its proximity to Thailand to offer Thai gamblers casinos along its border.

Myanmar also had a brisk business with Chinese tourists. However, in June 2005, it was reported that the government was collaborating with China in its fight against gambling, forcing many border casinos to shut down.

Local residents are not allowed to gamble in the casinos.

In February 2017, the government of Myanmar began to consider changes to its 1986 Gambling Law, which, if adopted, would legalize casinos in popular tourist destinations.
