Georgia Sports Betting

In early 2019, a sports betting bill was introduced that would create a Georgia sports betting director position and "provide for the comprehensive regulation of sports betting and related activities." Under the bill, no more than 10 "sports betting permits" would be allowed. In April 2021, the House of Representatives in Georgia was unable to come to any resolution regarding sports betting in the state, after passing in the Senate.

In February 2024, the Senate endorsed Senate Resolution 579 with a vote of 41-12. If passed by the House and by voters in November, it would allocate 80% of sports betting taxes to support prekindergarten programs, redirecting funds to college scholarships once prekindergarten programs are adequately funded. An additional 15% of the proceeds would be earmarked for assisting individuals with gambling issues, while the remaining 5% would establish a fund aimed at attracting and financing major sports events in Georgia.
