In January 2019, S. 59 was introduced, but never advanced. In January 2021, a bill that would authorize sports betting through the lottery and allow up to six mobile sportsbook operators was introduced and was waiting to be heard in the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs.

In March 2023, H.127 became the first sports betting bill to pass the Vermont House, and the governor supported the legislation.

In May 2023, the Vermont House of Representatives approved the amendments made by the state Senate to H.127 and the approval of the bill paved the way for Vermont's governor to sign the bill into law.

In June 2023, Governor Phil Scott signed Vermont's sports betting bill into law and in July 2023, Vermont regulators approved amended rules for sports betting and event wagering.

In January 2024, online sports betting launched in Vermont.
