Wisconsin Race Wagering

Pari-mutuel betting became legal in 1987. Although the law legalizing pari-mutuel wagering authorized betting on horse, dog and snowmobile races, dog racing was the only activity that drew live wagering in the state. Betting on horses was limited to simulcasts at Wisconsin racetracks from race events held in other states. Racing experts had warned, at the time, that Wisconsin did not have an adequate number of gamblers to support both horse and dog racing.

Pari-mutuel greyhound racing ended when Wisconsin's last remaining pari-mutuel racetrack, Dairyland Greyhound Park, closed its doors on 31 December 2009. The track, which had been open since 1990, was forced to close due to significant financial losses.

Although now inactive, pari-mutuel greyhound racing and wagering are still legal in Wisconsin.
