Arizonian Lotteries

In 1980, Arizona became the first state west of the Mississippi to authorize a state-run lottery. The ballot initiative passed 51% to 49%. Since 1981, more than $3 billion has been contributed to community programs and projects.

The public was asked twice through statewide referendums, in 2002 and in 2010, whether the state should continue operating a lottery. Both times, the lottery was approved. Currently, the lottery has permission to operate until 2035.
