Maryland Sports Betting

Maryland's authorized sports betting operators include commercial casinos, racetracks, sports arenas, and online operators B1 and B2 licenses are available to state fairgrounds, OTB’s, and commercial bingo facilities.

In February 2018, Maryland House Bill No. 989 was introduced and called for the establishment of a task force to "study the implementation of sports gaming in the state." The bill did not move forward in the 2018 legislative session.

In March 2018, a sports betting bill overwhelmingly passed the state House by a vote of 124-14, but there was no action on the bill in the Senate, effectively ending any hope of the state legalizing sports wagering in 2018.

In April 2019, Maryland lawmakers followed through on a three-year promise to update laws against illegal gambling and passed a new bill that would fine those charged with illegal gambling rather than having them face possible jail time. Fines for players will be capped at anywhere from $500 to $1,000. Bookmakers will see their fines capped at $5,000.

In April 2021, Maryland lawmakers passed a sweeping sports betting bill that will permit as many as 60 online operators and 30 retail sportsbooks between casinos, professional sports stadiums, small businesses and scores of other entities and organizations. Gov. Larry Hogan signed it into law in May 2021 and in December 2021 retail sportsbooks went live. In November 2022, mobile sports betting launched with seven different operators.
