Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Patients Enjoy Maryland State Fair Fun by Paige Acevedo Communications Specialist, Johns Hopkins Children's Center
The Maryland State Fair brought smiles and fun to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center pediatric patients. Along with several volunteer vendors, State Fair organizers created a miniature fair right inside the children’s hospital, complete with traditional fair foods, music, games and entertainment. For many kids, the fair was an opportunity to enjoy the Maryland summer tradition while continuing medical treatment. After winning games, kids earned tickets that they could turn in for prizes. Kids also learned about Maryland agriculture and even planted their own seeds.

Maryland State Fair Milestones: This year, marks the 50th year that the amazing Dave Brauning has served on the Maryland State Fair & Agricultural Society Board of Directors and as a MD State Fair participant for 80 years. Yesterday, while announcing the Open Class Holstein Show, he was surprised with a Maryland Gubernatorial Proclamation presented by Governor Wes Moore and a Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Citation presented by Secretary Kevin Atticks.
Mr. Brauning started showing Holstein Cattle at 9-years-old. He is most proud of his membership on the 1954 MD State 4-H Youth Judging Team that won the National Contest and represented the U.S. in the International Contest in England.
Mr. Brauning’s history of being in a multi-generational agriculture family, his leadership skills, and his business acumen have made him an invaluable asset to the MD State Fair and its Board of Directors. Mr. Brauning has served in a variety of capacities such as president of the board, overall livestock superintendent, dairy superintendent, and more. Currently, Dave serves as agriculture committee chairman. Shout Out to the businesses and individuals who came together Monday night, in person and online via Cowbuyer.com, to support 67 Maryland youth who qualified to participate in the Maryland State Fair Youth Livestock Sale that grossed $189,500. The 67 4-H/FFA youth will receive the proceeds from the sale of their animal to invest in next year’s project or for their future educational endeavors. “The Maryland State Fair 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale was the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and competition by 4-H/FFA youth. The youth invested a lot of time, work, and money in their projects to prepare them for competition and the sale," said Maryland State Fair GM David Gordon. “Through the process, they learned responsibility for their animals and the ability to make wise management decisions.” Check out the Grand Champions photos here:

St. Mary’s Wild Things 4-H Club Wyatt Mast’s 109-pound Grand Champion Market Goat was purchased by Bounds Accounting for $3,750.
Queen Anne’s County 4-H Goat Club Stephen King’s 124-pound Grand Champion Market Lamb was purchased by Crowning Glory Farm for $4,500.
Frederick County Paddock Pals 4-H Club Peighton Rhinehart’s Grand Champion 1,472-pound Market Steer was purchased by Growing People, Carol Chaney, and KCL Electric for $7,500.
